Anxiety: When Is It Time to Get Help?

Anxiety is not a malfunction. It is a system that evolved to keep you alert to danger, and most of the time it does its job and stands down.

The useful question is not whether you feel anxious — everyone does. It is whether anxiety has started deciding things for you: which invitations you decline, which conversations you avoid, which opportunities you quietly stop considering.

Other signals worth noticing: worry that keeps running with nothing to attach itself to, sleep you cannot fall into because your mind will not settle, and physical symptoms that a doctor has already ruled other causes out for.

Anxiety is among the most treatable conditions in mental health. Most people improve, many within weeks of starting. Waiting rarely makes it easier — avoidance tends to teach anxiety that it was right.
