About Us

Why we started J&M Behavioral Health Group

Mental health care works best when it is unhurried, honest, and built on a relationship rather than a checklist.

Our story

How we got here

I founded the J&M Behavioral Health Group of North Carolina because I saw, again and again, how few options existed for people in my own community. Here in Rocky Mount and across eastern North Carolina, mental health care is scarce. Patients wait months for an appointment, drive hours to find a provider, or turn to the emergency room because there is nowhere else to go. In the ICU and the emergency department, I cared for too many people in crisis who had spent years waiting for help that never came, or who had been treated as a diagnosis instead of a person. I knew our community deserved better.

I built J&M to be that better option, close to home. My goal is to close the gap in access by offering timely, judgment-free care that treats the whole person, not just a symptom list, and to bring the same urgency, thoroughness, and compassion I learned at the bedside into every visit. I want the patients of Rocky Mount and the surrounding region to feel seen, safe, and genuinely cared for, and to know that someone with real experience in the hardest moments of medicine is walking alongside them.

Background

How this practice came about

I founded J&M Behavioral Health Group of North Carolina from both professional experience and a deeply personal understanding of what it means to need compassionate healthcare. Before I ever sat on the provider's side of the desk, I knew what it was like to sit on the other side. I know what it feels like to need someone to truly listen, to look beyond a list of symptoms, and to see the person behind them. Those experiences have stayed with me and continue to shape the provider I strive to be today.

My career began in nursing, where I had the privilege of caring for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. As I advanced my education and became a Family Nurse Practitioner, my experience in primary care and urgent care gave me an even greater appreciation for the connection between physical and mental health. I repeatedly saw patients whose needs could not be placed neatly into one category. Physical health affected mental health, mental health affected physical health, and too often patients were left trying to navigate the space between the two.

That realization led me to further my education and training in psychiatric mental health. Becoming both a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner gave me the opportunity to approach patients from a more comprehensive perspective and reinforced my belief that quality healthcare should treat the whole person.

J&M Behavioral Health Group was created from that belief. I wanted to build a practice where children, adolescents, and adults can walk through the door knowing they will be listened to, respected, and involved in their care. My goal is for patients and families to feel comfortable discussing the things that are difficult to talk about and confident that their concerns will be taken seriously.

For me, J&M is more than a practice. It represents the culmination of my experiences as a patient, a nurse, and a provider, and my commitment to bringing the same compassion, thoroughness, and advocacy I would want for myself and my own family to every person who entrusts me with their care.

Our philosophy of care

How we approach treatment

Unhurried

Fifteen-minute medication checks are the norm in this field. They are not enough time to understand a person, and we don't pretend otherwise.

Collaborative

You are the one who lives in your life. A plan you don't believe in is a plan that doesn't get followed, and that is our failure rather than yours.

Honest

Medication has side effects. Some things take a while to work. Some don't work at all. You'll hear that from us plainly.

Without judgement

Whatever you have been doing to cope, you can say so here. We have heard it, and it does not change how you'll be treated.
